Day 3.
Body off day! I say day 3, more like day 9. But day 3 makes me think I'll have her back on the road in no time and day 9 doesn't. So day 3 it is.

After removing the remaining parts like the pedal box adjustment rod, Smiths heater, windscreen wiper motor, remaining wiring, then all the body mounting screws (double checking I hadn't forgotten any) it was time to jack the car up from beneath the boot floor. Great care was taken but finally after a lot of creaks and groans the body decided to lift.

I tried winching the body from above but didn't have enough ceiling clearance in the end.

Pretty clear the lower chassis rails will need replacing. How many more I wonder...

Then with blocks of wood propping up the back of the car it was wheeled out into daylight. My assistant and I (she loves it when I call her that) lifted from either side until the back was at 45 degrees and the floor pans were clear of the chassis, then pulled backwards until it was clear.

At first glance most of the chassis doesn't appear to be too bad to me - except the front end butchering by a previous owner and the rusty side rails. I guess it's how solid the metal is the replacement tubes have to weld to that's the important question. Hope my optimism isn't misplaced!

Anyway, progress has been made. Next up engine and gearbox removal and the stripping of the chassis.

  1. Hi...............I used to have a 3 litre Volvo engined Marcos (JRK 2K) back in the 1980's which had cosmic alloys rather than the Marcos wheels you have on your car. As far as I understood, The 3 litre volvo engine required a different rear axle which meant that Marcos alloys would not fit which is why this particular version had cosmic alloys instead. The images of your car shows the original Marcos alloys all round so perhaps someone with more knowledge than me could explain?

Is it due the car being built to US spec? Would that make a difference or does it really need cosmic alloys?

    1. Hi, thanks for posting. I'm converting to a manual box and having the engine rebuilt with some tasteful upgrades, so it won't be completely original but I'll try where possible. The axle is from a Ford Falcon and has been fitted by a previous owner for reasons unknown. I'll keep these wheels but maybe go for spoked wheels or maybe Minilites.
